editTips and Tricks
Below are 10 tips and tricks on how to write heart-wrenching tragedy.
-
Tragedy has general stages: anticipation, dream, frustration, nightmare, and then destruction.
-
The tragic hero of the story should suffer some type of downfall by the end of the story.
-
To pull at the reader’s heartstrings, the tragedy presented in the story should be one that anyone could face.
-
Create characters that the reader can relate to and will care about.
- Ensure that by the end of the story, the tragedy has impacted the lives of the characters.
-
Use metaphors and/or similes as they can evoke emotions which can then be overlaid on the scene – further meaning can be given to the scene than if the scene was simply described.
-
Include unexpected twists to give hope – but still end with a downfall/tragedy.
-
The plot should include a stage of building tension which is then eventually resolved – resolutions do not have to be positive.
-
In addition to the standard tragedy there are others, such as the protagonist descending into evil or simply having the good guys lose to the villain.
-
Tragic victory is a very powerful form of tragedy as conflicting emotions result from a situation that would otherwise be joyous.
